Vegan Chocolate Orange Cut-Out Cookies

These vegan chocolate-orange cookies are rich and lightly cocoa-y with a bright citrus twist. They roll out beautifully for cut-out shapes, bake up crisp at the edges and tender in the center, and finish perfectly with a dusting of powdered sugar. A great winter cookie—especially for gifting.

Chocolate orange cookie dough Instructions

  1. Prepare the vegan egg replacer according to the package instructions (using the amount listed). Let it sit for a minute to thicken.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened vegan butter with sugar, vanilla sugar, and a pinch of salt until creamy.
  3. Mix in the lemon zest and orange flavouring.
  4. Add the prepared egg replacer and mix until smooth and well combined.
  5. Add the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Mix until a soft dough forms. If it feels dry or crumbly, add oat milk 1 tablespoon at a time (only as needed).
  6. Shape the dough into a flat disc, wrap, and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Rolling and baking Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 5–7mm thickness.
  3. Cut out shapes and place them on the sheet pan with a bit of space between them.
  4. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until the cookies look set and the edges feel firm.
  5. Let cool on the tray for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack and cool completely.
  6. Optional: dust with powdered sugar once fully cool.
  7. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough helps the cookies keep sharp edges and reduces spreading.
  • Orange flavouring varies in strength—start with a small amount (as listed) and adjust next time if you want more.
  • If the dough cracks while rolling, let it sit at room temperature for 5 minutes and roll again.
  • Dust with powdered sugar only after the cookies are fully cool, otherwise it melts.
  • For an even more “chocolate orange” vibe, add a little finely grated orange zest if you have it.
